GAZ-51 - the most mass produced Soviet truck of 50-70-s. Payload 2,5 tons. Designing of the car, first named GAZ-11-51, subsequently simply GAZ-51 started in February 1937. Successful test drives made it possible to start in 1941 preparation for serial production, but the WWII ruined the plans. Developing work on the vehicle resumed in 1943. The rapid development of technology during the war caused inevitable improvements in the design of GAZ-51. The leading constructor A.D. Prosvirnik radically redesigned the truck, and, in fact, only the name of the pre-war GAZ-51 remained intact. There was applied the well-proven hydraulic brake drive, designed more comfortable and modern cab. Tire dimensions were enlarged, payload reached 2,5 tons, was achieved almost total unification with all wheel drive version - GAZ-63. Initial batch was released in late 1945, and by the end of 1946, even before the testing was completed, more than thirty thousand trucks had been produced. Within the short period GAZ-51 became the most popular truck all over the country. On its base numerous specialized vehicles were developed ??fire engines, tippers, buses, ambulances, vans, movers, tanks, truck cranes, export versions, including those for tropical countries. GAZ-51 was produced for more than 30 years. Production was cancelled in 1975. There were released 3 481 033 vehicles.
